Mentorship
If you are considering applying to a PhD program in public health, particularly concentrations in health policy and management, or to a lesser extent business school doctoral, please feel free to reach out to me for advice on a variety of issues. I am happy to read and give comments on personal statement drafts, CVs, and other parts of the application, or to discuss where to apply, potential mentors, aspects of the profession, etc. I can also make connections to faculty, administrative staff, or other graduate students who may be helpful resources.
This offer is especially targeted to people of color, women, members of the LGBTQ+ community, first generation college graduates, and other communities traditionally underrepresented in academia. Many parts of the PhD application process rely heavily on a “hidden curriculum” of knowledge that is less accessible to applicants outside of privileged positions. I was lucky and privileged to receive excellent mentorship on my application process. Diversifying academia means offering that same knowledge to those outside of typical power structures. Applicants or potential applicants at any stage of the process are welcome to reach out.
Feel free to reach out to me via email at: a.holmgren@ucsf.edu, through Twitter DM @AJHolmgren, or schedule a Zoom meeting directly through https://calendly.com/a-holmgren and note in the calendar request that this is a mentorship meeting.
